Breakfast Foods

Breakfast is an important meal as it is the first meal taken in the day and comes long after the last meal taken the night before. It is important that the day begins with a good, substantial breakfast which not only makes you feel better but also gives you enough energy to face the day. Always remember to clean your mouth, your face and your teeth before breakfast.

Some people like a cold shower before breakfast as it makes them very fresh and awake. You look neat and more presentable if you change out of your pajamas and comb your hair before sitting down to breakfast. It is better to choose foods that can be cooked easily and quickly so that you have enough time to eat your food without rushing.

Breakfast Foods:

1. Fruit. Fresh fruit early in the morning is very refreshing. Bananas and papaya are quick and easy to serve. Oranges, pineapples and grapefruit can either be served fresh or as fruit juice.

2. Cereal. Cereals give use heat and energy for the day's activities. Cereals that are popular for breakfast are bread, oat and commercially prepared cereals.

3. A high protein food. This is necessary for building the body and for repairing worn out tissues. The most easily digested and the most easily prepared protein food for breakfast is egg which can be cooked in a very short time.

4. Milk. It is very important that all growing boys and girls drink milk every day. Milk can be served with the cereal, example in oats or in the hot drink which can be cocoa, coffee and tea.

Bread is very popular food for breakfast because it is fairly cheap, it requires no cooking and can be eaten as it is and it keeps well for two or three days or more. Bread contains mainly carbohydrates but all bread bought from a good and reliable bakery contains vitamins and minerals as well.

Fresh bread is very tempting and delicious but it is difficult to digest. As bread is kept, it dries and therefore hardens and is not so nice to eat. When bread is stale, its flavor is improved if re-cooked, example toast which is not only tastier but also more digestible. Many kinds of bread are sold.

Common kinds of bread sold are:

1. White bread which is very open textured and spongy with a dark brown crust on top.

2. Sandwich bread which is closer textured, is flat on all sides and has a light brown crust all round it.

3. Wholemeal bread which is a slightly speckled bread with an open texture. It is made from flour which has been ground from the whole wheat grain and it is the bran in flour that gives it the speckled look. Wholemeal bread is said to be more nourishing than white bread.

4. Brown bread which is similar to white bread but is colored brown. Unlike wholemeal bread, it has an even light brown color. It is not as nourishing as wholemeal bread.

Fresh bread is very soft and is a little difficult to cut, but with a sharp knife or bread knife and some practice, it cuts fairly well. It is much easier to cut stale bread which should always be cut into even 1/2" slices for making toast. Bread should not be cut more than 1/2" thick as it makes it very difficult to eat.
