Breakfast Casserole Ideas

Breakfast casseroles are a great way to have a hearty breakfast and enjoy a nice change of pace from the usual cereal, oatmeal, toast or bagel. You can even prepare this breakfast dish the night before, and bake it in the oven the following morning while you get ready to start the day. For busy individuals, these one dish meals can be a fast, easy, and convenient way to get some valuable nutrition and energy before you start a long days work; or for the kids before they head off to school. Breakfast is still the most essential meal of the day, and a delicious and nutritious breakfast all-in-one dish is the perfect choice.

One of the fastest and most popular dishes is the sausage casserole. All you need are ground sausage, slices of bread (buttered and cubed), milk, eggs, dry mustard, salt and grated sharp cheddar cheese. Cook sausage until crumbly and browned. Beat milk, eggs, mustard and salt. Place the sausage, bread cubes and grated cheese on top of each other in a lightly oiled baking dish. Spoon the egg mixture over the top of all those layers and bake. Or, you may leave the uncooked dish in the fridge overnight and bake the next morning.

If you are having special guests over in the morning, something rich and hearty would be a great breakfast idea. Try a ham and two cheese breakfast bake. This is an especially popular dish often made during the winter holidays, but it is also perfect for everyday mornings. This type of dish tends to be very filling. Ideally it can be prepared the night before, refrigerated, and baked the next day.

For this breakfast casserole, bread cubes are layered into the bottom-most part of the casserole dish. This layer is then topped with ham, Swiss cheese, cheddar cheese and some the extra bread cubes left. Milk, eggs, and onion powder are mixed together and placed evenly over the bread cubes. The dish is sealed and refrigerated for the night. The next day, melted butter and crushed cornflakes are combined and then poured evenly over the casserole. Finally, the whole dish is baked for forty five minutes to an hour and cooled slightly prior to serving.

For those watching their calorie intake, healthy and light breakfast casseroles are still quick and easy to make. It can take less than twenty minutes to prepare, and thirty to forty five minutes to bake. For a healthy breakfast, you can use chopped onion, bell pepper, eggs, milk, bacon bits and fiber-rich bread. You may use half egg substitute and half the usual eggs, as well as low-fat milk to cut down on calories and fat even further.

A tasty, one dish breakfast can be made be made in minutes and is a delicious way to start any morning. The possibilities are endless, limited only to taste and imagination.
