An additional choice would be to go with either Beaujolais or sauvignon Blanc, as they do nothing much less than make your experience with this food and wine pairing some thing to keep in mind. As usually, if your pizza has mushrooms in it, which will most likely not be the case with pineapple and ham pizza, try some pinot noir.

Speaking of pinot noir, this selection is also incredible with white sauce pizza. You can't go wrong when attempting out this mixture, or when attempting white sauce pizza with Italian Pinot Grigio. The taste is, to put it merely, godly.

Long Beach is well-known for its wine tasting events, so in the event you stop by, be certain to try the fabulous and rare wines, as you might not have the ability to deal with their sweet taste for a lengthy time.

Steak Breakfast

Some people have champagne for breakfast. Some have ice-cream. And for some reason, most people think they should have wholegrain for breakfast, whether or not that is what is right for their body at that moment in time. Me, I eat what I feel like within my budget. I found this a great way to start my day today. If you have meat-eaters staying over for the weekend, surprise them with this steak breakfast or brunch.

Celery leaves are usually leftovers in my home from munching on celery stalks. Celery is great for munching raw, as it is absolutely delicious and is my number one comfort food at the moment. It also is said to use up more energy (totally raw) to digest than you get from eating it, which is another bonus. Anyway, celery leaves go well with meaty breakfast fry-ups. I fry these for a very short time in butter - just about two minutes. I like my meat now rare, thanks to my spouse! The seasoning is what makes the meal. Arabian spices are used to season the meat - allspice and cinnamon. Sprinkle them onto the meat as it you are sprinkling salt.

Breakfast Pizza

As a health nut, I follow the latest health-nut advice, such as avoiding non-stick pans and aluminium pans. I use only natural ingredients and do my best to get organic meat. You should use whatever is right for you. I am not a nutritionist or doctor.

This really is nice as it is. There is no need to put it in a bun or add anything, although it does go with ketchup. The serving is large enough as a standalone breakfast for most people.

Ingredients

Butter for frying

Per person

Tsp chopped garlic and mild chili (if you do not have chili, you can leave it out)

Two big handfuls of celery leaves

Two handfuls of mushrooms

Sea salt

Small steak, cut into stir-fry pieces

Peppercorns to grind, allspice, cinnamon

Melt the butter in a pan with the garlic and chili. While this happens, roughly cut the celery leaves and mushrooms. Quickly add top the butter mixture and sprinkle with sea salt. Keep stirring, as this is a stir-fry. Before you add the meat, sprinkle it with ground peppercorns, allspice, and cinnamon. Very quickly rub them in, then add the meat to the vegetables and stir very quickly until meat is sealed. Take off heat and serve.

Enjoy with someone you care for or as a treat for yourself!

Three Healthy Breakfast Recipes

You've heard it before, time and time again - "breakfast is the most important meal of the day" - but in our hectic, on-the-go society, people often rush through breakfast or skip it altogether. Try these 3 easy healthy breakfast recipes to start your day off right.

1. Spicy Scrambled Eggs

I love spicy food! This zesty breakfast is sure to wake up your taste buds.

Ingredients:

2 teaspoons of butter, olive oil, or coconut oil

1/2 cup diced pepper, orange or red

1/2 cup diced onion

2 large eggs

1/4 cup milk

1/4 cup cheese

Sea Salt

Ground Pepper

1/4 cup salsa

1/2 avocado

2 whole wheat tortillas or slices of toast

Heat one teaspoon of butter or oil over medium heat in a skillet. Add pepper and cook until soft, then add onion. When the diced onion begins to sweat, remove the pepper and onion from a skillet and save them on a plate. Rinse the skillet clean.

In a mixing bowl, whisk eggs with milk. The milk will make the scrambled eggs extra fluffy. Season with salt and pepper. Add one teaspoon of butter or oil to skillet. Add egg-milk mixture and cook over medium heat, constantly stirring with a spatula. After a couple of minutes, when the eggs are nearly scrambled to your liking, add the pepper, onion, and cheese.

Use pepper jack cheese for an extra kick! For added spice, sprinkle hot sauce, ground cumin, or paprika over the eggs.

Serve with fresh salsa, avocado, and whole wheat toast or tortillas. If you're in a hurry, you can make a breakfast sandwich or breakfast burrito! Sometimes I add other ingredients to the scrambled eggs, like diced tomatoes, sliced mushrooms, or spinach.

2. Fruit & Protein Breakfast Smoothie

There's nothing like a drinkable breakfast when you're in a hurry.

Ingredients:

2 cups fresh mixed berries (whatever's in season)

1/4 cup pomegranate or acai berry juice

3 tablespoons honey

1 cup silken tofu

1 teaspoon ground flaxseed

1 cup silken tofu

Simply combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. The tofu provides protein; the flaxseed provides fiber as well as omega-3 fatty acid; and the juice and berries provide a healthy dose of antioxidants.

3. Homemade Breakfast Bars

I like to make these homemade breakfast bars over the weekend and save them as a back-up breakfast throughout the week. It seems like there's always at least one morning during the week when I just don't have time to cook.

Ingredients:

1 cup peanut butter or almond butter (I prefer organic)

3/4 cup honey (I prefer raw honey)

3 cups rolled oats

1 cup toasted almonds, slivered

1/2 cup raisins (or another dried fruit, like cranberries)

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Grease an oven-safe pan with butter, or spray it with cooking spray. Preheat oven to 350. Over a medium flame, cook the peanut butter and honey in a saucepan for about five minutes, whisking until the mixture has melted. Stir in the vanilla and cinnamon, then add the oats, almonds, and raisins. Bake for 15 minutes, let cool, and cut into squares.

These homemade breakfast bars will last for about a week in the fridge, and they'll last for several weeks if you wrap them up and stick them in the freezer. They go great with an apple, banana, or another piece of fruit. It's easy to grab one when you're on the run, and they're much healthier than store-bought breakfast bars that are full of corn syrup.

Now that you have these quick, tasty breakfast recipes, you have no excuse to skip breakfast. It really is the most important meal of the day because it gets your metabolism going. People who skip breakfast have a harder time losing weight. Try to include protein in your breakfast, as it will help curb your appetite throughout the day, and try to include complex carbs like whole wheat and fruit, as they'll provide energy and help control hunger.

How to Have a Healthy Breakfast

While it is said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, you also need to make sure that it is a healthy meal. For adults, the advantages of having a healthy breakfast include the reduction of cholesterol, which results in a decrease in the risk of heart disease; weight control; better concentration and productivity; less consumption of cholesterol and fat; and more consumption of vitamins and minerals. For children and adolescents, the advantages of a healthy breakfast include better concentration, creativity, alertness and problem-solving skills; a more physically active body; and less missed school days.

The basic components of a healthy breakfast are fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy, low-fat protein, and whole grains. Fruits and vegetables must be fresh and you may include fruit juices but without any sugar added. Low-fat dairy foods include low-fat cheeses, low-fat yogurt, and skim milk. Low-fat protein sources include lean cuts of poultry and meat, peanut butter, hard-boiled eggs, and fish. For whole grains, you can eat crackers, low-fat bran muffins, whole-grain cereals, and whole-grain rolls.

Breakfast Pizza

Dry cereals can be used for a healthy breakfast but you need to read the nutrition label to check on the ingredients. Some of the important items that you can check when you read the label are calories, sugar, and fiber. You may want to choose cereals that have lower than 120 calories for each serving. The presence of sugar does not necessarily mean that food in unhealthy but it is desirable not to have more than 13 grams of sugar for each serving. Meanwhile, the minimum amount of fiber for each serving should be three grams. Do not forget to add skim or low-fat milk and some fruit. And if you are in a hurry, you can try eating some cereal bars but remember to drink low-fat milk or yogurt and eat a bit of fruit.

Other examples of foods for a healthy breakfast include cold cereal with a side of fruit, some vegetable pizza, whole-wheat pita with hard-boiled eggs, cold cereal with a bit of fruit, cooked oatmeal with some dried cranberries or almonds, potato cooked in the microwave oven and topped with Parmesan cheese and broccoli, whole-wheat crackers with peanut butter or low-fast cheese, and fruit shake from various exotic fruits. Remember that leaving out breakfast to save on calories is not a proper way to lose weight. If you do not have breakfast, you are likely to be very hungry at lunchtime and you are likely to eat more.

Making Pizza Dough in a Bread Maker

I really can't recommend bread makers enough. They are great tools. Waking up every morning to the smell of fresh bread is amazing. Even better? Spreading butter over warm bread. Over a year or so of making your own bread, a bread machine will also save you money; it costs about $8 for several weeks worth of bread flour. You'll also give yourself access to tons of bread variety - there are vast tomes of bread machine recipes out there.

All that said? That's not why we're here. I like to talk about pizza sauce recipes. And pizza sauce needs to go on a pizza crust. Today, I'd like to detail my recipe for pizza dough, using a bread maker.

This will make a pizza crust between 14 and 16 inches.

Water-----------1 cup
Olive Oil---------1.5 tbs
Salt-------------.5 tsp
all purpose flour- 1.5 cups
wheat flour------1.5 cups
baking yeast---- 1.5 tsp

It's best to put in your liquid ingredients first, followed by flour and salt. Make sure to put the salt in one corner of the bread maker, you don't want to deactivate the yeast accidentally. Even out the ingredients, a good tap against the countertop will work, then put a small divot in the flour for your yeast. Your bread maker will have a "dough" setting. That's what you want to use--obviously we don't want to bake the dough in the maker!

When the dough is finished, roll it out into your preferred shape, square works pretty well if you lack a pizza stone. Place your index of your non-dominant hand along the side of the crust and use the index finger of your dominant hand to fold the edge of the dough over your index finger. This will form a small "roll" in the dough. By repeating that process along the whole edge of the dough, you'll form a crust that will bake up nicely.

There you are! You've made a crust. Slather it with pizza sauce and put on toppings, then bake. I like to bake at 325 for about 25 minutes, long enough to bake the crust, without burning the cheese. Try it out and let me know what you think!

Make Your Pizza Easily With These Tools

Who doesn't like pizza? If you're like our kids, you could eat it almost daily! But have you thought about making your own delicious pizza? No, I'm not talking about those pizzas in a box you buy at the store. I'm talking about making your own pizza recipes.

There are many great reasons to make your own homemade pizza. For one, you can make them much more healthier than any restaurant. Your choices are enormous and it's also fun to do.

Breakfast Pizza

With that said, there are a few items that can help you in making your own pizza recipes.

Pizza Stone - A pizza stone is nice to have and goes a long way in thoroughly and evenly baking your pizza. One of the keys in using a stone is to put it in the oven when you turn on the heat. You want to preheat it before using.

Another tip here is in cleaning your pizza stone. Never use soap on it. What happens is that it will soak into the stone and ruin the entire process. Use water only when cleaning.

Pizza Dough Docker - This is a handy tool that prevents your crust from rising. It pokes holes in the crust similar to using a fork.

Pizza Shovel - One of these will prevent you from getting your hand burned as you put the pizza on the stone or remove it after baking.

It looks sort of like a spatula you would use on your outdoor grill, but much larger in order to pick up pizzas.

These three simple tools will help make homemade pizza recipes much easier.

How To Make Pizza - A Step By Step Guide To Show You How To Make Pizza

So you want to learn how to make pizza yourself? Making pizzas is quite easy when you know the steps involved. Follow this step by step guide to making your own pizzas at home, and delight everyone with the flavor of your hands.

Step 1. Preparing your tomato pizza sauce

Melt the butter with the olive oil and slowly but completely sauté the garlic and onion in a skillet.

Add the tomatoes, salt, pepper, oregano, basil and puree. Bring to a boil, then simmer covered for two hours. Stir occasionally, crushing the tomatoes with a potato masher.

Continue to mash, stir, and simmer partially covered until the sauce reaches the consistency of a rich soup.

Step 2 Making Pizza Dough

Making your own pizza dough by hand is both challenging and satisfying. Home made pizza dough, "from scratch," is without a doubt the single most defining factor that differentiates a great pizza from any other pizza that you will ever have. And, the personal gratification that comes of successfully making pizza at home for yourself, your loved-ones and your friends makes it all the more worthwhile.

Step 3 Panning the Prepared Pizza Dough

Panning the dough is the step where you use a rolling pin or machines to create the pizza base with your dough. There are machines that help you sheet and pan the pizza dough, or you can use the hand tossing method or the rolling pin if you want to do it yourself.

Depending on the style, size, composition and number of pizzas you choose to make, the methods of sizing, shaping, trimming, and ultimately, panning the pizza dough, will vary.

step 4 Topping the Pizza

First, spread the pizza sauce evenly over the surface of the dough. Spoon the sauce out to the edge of the dough sheet, leaving "un-sauced" about 3/4" to 1" of the dough crust.

Next, layer the shredded cheese creating an evenly distributed bed of cheese on which to arrange your toppings. (You will use another cup of cheese for finishing off the top of the pizza.)

From this point on, let your eyes, nose, creativity and taste buds take over to add other toppings to your pizza.

Some toppings, (fresh vegetables, certain cheeses and fatty meats), are higher in moisture and fat content and you have to take this into account when you use them, to ensure your pizza doesn't turn out soggy.

Step 5 Baking the Pizza

The final step is to bake to pizza. When you oven is at the right temperature place a prepped pizza in the center of the middle rack to allow for maximum air circulation around the pan.

Make adjustments to your baking process one at a time until you've found the perfect balance of rack position, temperature and baking time to suit your oven.

Signs to look for that the pizza is ready are:

- The cheese has melted on top and is beginning to brown,

- The crust edge has browned, from a medium to a golden brown, and,

- Carefully lift the edge of the pizza to inspect its bottom. The bottom dough should be evenly browned.

If these signs are evident, your pizza is done!

Are You Eating a Healthy Breakfast Yet?

Let's focus on your health and how you can improve it by eating a healthy breakfast. Notice that I said a healthy breakfast? Eating sugary cereals or leftover pizza does not count as eating a healthy breakfast.

You say you have no time to eat breakfast? It only takes getting up 10 minutes earlier so that you can eat something before your day starts.

Breakfast Pizza

Want to lose some weight? Eating a healthy breakfast in the morning will kick start your metabolism. During the night your body is busy conserving calories. Eating something in the morning will "break" the "fast" that your body is on and will start to end the conservation time to return your energy levels back to normal. Waiting to eat later in the morning, after being up for hours is counter-productive. Skipping breakfast does not result in losing weight, it frequently results in the total opposite. You gain weight when you skip breakfast as you tend to eat even more calories throughout the day.

You want to eat breakfast to start your metabolism running so that you have energy. A car doesn't run on empty and neither does your body. Fill a car with premium gasoline and watch it go. It's the same with your body by fueling it with a healthy breakfast.

Eating a healthy breakfast will stop the mid-morning high-calorie cravings for food at work and the trip to the vending machine or the donut shop for a muffin or sugary donut. Your wallet will also thank you for eating breakfast at home.

You can treat breakfast as quality time with your family. There's nothing like sitting down and enjoying a healthy breakfast with the rest of the family. Start the day off right by eating healthy and enjoying your family. Don't be surprised if your children do better in school, as well. Eating a healthy breakfast in the morning helps them concentrate better as they are not concerned with the rumblings in their stomachs, plus they are more likely to be physically active throughout the day.

You will be setting a good example for your children for their later years. They'll remember sitting down with the family and enjoying their breakfast which will translate to better health in their future. Start the habit early in their lives and they will thank you for it.

You may notice that you're more productive and alert at work, as well. Your boss will appreciate you working, rather than going out for the 10:00 am coffee/donut run. It's called the Most Important Meal of the Day for a reason.

What to eat for breakfast? Ideally, you should have a good combination of protein (such as eggs, dairy, meat and beans) and fibre (found in whole grains, vegetables and fruits). Have an egg, a glass of milk and a banana or have yoghurt with whole grain cereal with blueberries. There are endless combinations that you can enjoy in the morning. You can even split your breakfast if you're rushed for time by eating a hard boiled egg at home and bringing a piece of fruit with some walnuts or almonds to snack on when you get to work. You don't have to eat breakfast food, either. You don't have to eat oatmeal if you don't want to. Instead, you can eat a peanut butter and jam sandwich on whole wheat bread, if you want. In a pinch, you can even eat some of your leftovers from last night (as long as they are healthy).

Remember to enjoy your food and start off your day the right way by eating a healthy breakfast.

How to Make Cheese Biscuits

In the new South each morning brings the roosters wake up call. This is shortly followed by the thunder of millions of cans of store bought biscuits slamming onto counter tops to open them. I won't dignify the result of that labor with the name biscuit because while it may be bread, a good biscuit it isn't.

This article will show you just how easy it is to make delicious cheese biscuits for breakfast. The process requires a little bit of work and a little bit of paying attention to details so that the result makes a breakfast your family will love.

The Ingredients:

3 cups all purpose flour sifted
1 stick butter ( 4 oz.) (keep it cold)
3 T baking powder
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
approximately 1 cup buttermilk ( not low fat)
1/2 cup finely shredded cheddar cheese
2 T melted butter

The preparation:

First turn on your oven to 450F to preheat. In a large bowl mix dry ingredients with a whisk. Using a pastry cutter blend the stick of butter into the flour thoroughly. When you are finished it should have a slightly mealy consistency. It is very important that the butter be very cold as this will produce light and flaky biscuits. A good rule of thumb is to cut the butter into 1/2 inch dices and place in freezer while you are getting everything else together.

After the butter is added the mix in the finely grated cheese and stir in the buttermilk to form the dough. Turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and gently form into a disc. Don't over work the dough or it will be tough. Roll the dough out to around 1/2 inch thickness and cut biscuits with a large cookie cutter. I use a pineapple can with both top and bottom removed to make nice big biscuits.

Make sure when cutting out the biscuits not to turn the cutter. If you do it will prevent the biscuits from rising as well. Place the biscuits on baking sheet and bake from 12-15 minutes watching them closely after 10 minutes because no two ovens cook alike.

After the biscuits are golden brown remove from oven and brush with melted butter. Now you are ready to serve your family a delicious breakfast!

A few variations:

For a delicious south of the border taste just add four strips of bacon finely crumbled and substitute pepper jack cheese for the cheddar. These are especially good served with chili or beef stew for a hearty cold weather meal.

For a sweet taste, remove the biscuits from the oven after 10 minutes and brush with melted butter. Then sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top and return to the oven for 3-5 more minutes. Your kids will love these!

Another good use for cheese biscuits is to serve them as the topping on chicken pot pie.

I hope you enjoy these recipes as much as we do at my house and God Bless Y'all.

Three Quick and Easy Family Breakfast Recipes

Even though I know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, I'll admit that it's also one of the hardest to go to a lot of trouble for during the busy weekday. We've never been big breakfast eaters at my house, in fact, cold cereal or toaster waffles are the usual fare on any given Monday through Friday morning around here. But, on the weekends we often like to whip up a big breakfast for the whole family and then actually sit down at the same table and eat it together. Wow, that's a feat in itself anymore!

The same old tired bacon and eggs do get boring after awhile however, so I've found some yummy breakfast recipes that meet my 'quick and easy' criteria. Since I have a picky preschooler who loves eggs but is on a 'no pancake' kick lately, I wanted a couple of really good recipes that will satisfy grown-up as well as kid tastes.

Breakfast Pizza

Quick and Easy Maple Toast and Eggs

12 bacon strips, diced

½ cup maple syrup

¼ cup butter

12 slices white bread (firmer texture is better)

Salt and pepper to taste

Cook bacon in skillet until crisp and then drain on paper towels. In a small saucepan, heat syrup and butter until the butter melts. Trim crusts from bread and flatten slices with a rolling pin. Brush one side with syrup mixture and press each slice into an ungreased muffin cup with syrup side down. Divide bacon among muffin cups. Break one egg into each cup and then sprinkle with salt and pepper. Cover with foil and bake on 400F for 20 minutes. Serves 12.

Quick and Easy Farmers Breakfast

6 bacon strips, diced

2 tbsp diced onion

3 medium potatoes, cooked and cubed

6 eggs, beaten

Salt and pepper to taste

½ cup shredded Cheddar cheese

Cook bacon in skillet until crisp and drain on paper towels. In the bacon drippings, sauté onion and potatoes until potatoes are browned. Pour eggs into skillet and cook until eggs are set and cooked to desired doneness. Season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle with cheese and bacon; let stand for 2 minutes or until cheese melts. Serves 4.

Quick and Easy Egg and Biscuit Breakfast

2 tbsp butter

8 eggs, beaten

1 - 5 oz can evaporated milk

1 - 8 oz package American cheese, cubed

1 tbsp prepared mustard

1 cup cubed cooked ham

1 - 10 oz can refrigerator biscuits

Melt butter in skillet. Add eggs and cook until set. In a saucepan, combine milk, cheese and mustard and cook until cheese is melted. Remove from heat and fold in ham and eggs. Pour into a greased 8 inch greased baking dish. Separate biscuits and place on top. Bake at 375F for 20 minutes or until biscuits are golden brown. Serves 4.

Pizza Stones

When making pizza, the taste will actually depend on the cooking process. In fact, for you to make a spicy and delicious one, the way you bake it will greatly determine the taste. Some ovens do not give the familiar and traditional taste and thus if you want this taste, then you need to always bake on the pizza stone.

Unlike when using the pan, the terra cotta tiles of the stone maintain the base layer crisp and you'll never have a soggy layer. This stone is available in different prices and must be accompanied by a paddle that is used for transferring the dish from hot stone. This enables the pizza to bake from both sides and comes out well crunchy. Paddles with long handles are mostly used and preferred ones.

Procedure for using a pizza stone is quite simple. First, put the stone in the oven and bake for about 15 minutes. Shake over the stone using a lump meal, make sure you shake the paddle of the stone open handed, using corn meal, put pizza bread on the paddle, mix the toppings into it carefully to prevent it from spoiling and use nippy jolting motions to transfer your dish from the paddle to the stone.

When you're done baking, ensure that the dish cools down before removing it from the microwave oven. Most important, remember not to put the stone in a hot microwave oven when it's cold. After cleaning, spread olive oil on the stone, do not use soap when cleaning.

How a Jamaican Breakfast Nearly Destroyed Christmas Dinner

Being part of a mixed marriage is fun. My wife's family is from the Caribbean whilst my own is a mixture of Irish and Scottish. As both cultures are rich in music and food we often have interesting moments in our life. Christmas day this year was no exception.

My lovely wife of 21 years was actually born in the United Kingdom and has a good grasp of both her Jamaican heritage and British culture. As with every other year, last Christmas she spent most of Christmas Eve preparing our traditional meal of Turkey, Brussels sprouts, carrots, peas, Yorkshire pudding and her own home made delicious cranberry sauce. It took several hours to put together and my wife devoted a lot of care so as you can imagine we where all looking forward to a feast on the big day itself.

Breakfast Pizza

Everything was going to plan Xmas morning, the turkey was in the oven and we had all just come back from Church. My mother-in-law arrived as per her invitation and had unexpectedly bought with her a traditional Jamaican breakfast.

It smelt and looked delicious and because it had been cooked fresh we had to eat it there and then. With great delight my children and I munched our way through Ackee, Saltfish and fried dumplings.

At this point let me educate you about this outstanding dish;

Ackee is actually a fruit which grows on trees in Jamaica. The edible part has the consistency of scrambled egg when cooked and it truly is delicious.

Saltfish which normally dried cod goes really well with Ackee creating a rich experience of flavours. It is fried together with the ackee and forms the wonderful pungent mass in the pan.

The fried dumplings are another Caribbean delicacy traditionally served at breakfast, made from flour and water they are deep fried and just taste exceptional. All I can say about these is that they are quite stodgy and personally I find it impossible to eat more than 3.

The problem was that by the time we had finished eating this meal it was near time for my wife's festive feast to be served up and in reality we where full up.

In the nick of time I pulled the kids together, put on coats and even though we all felt lethargic insisted that we all go on a very long yuletide walk. Needless to say we burned off breakfast and even though we sat down a little later, we all enjoyed my wife's wonderful food.

Cool Breakfast Facts

According to a Harvard University - Massachusetts General Hospital study of children in Philadelphia and Baltimore schools, students who usually ate school breakfast had better math grades, higher standardized test scores, decreased absences and tardiness, reduced hyperactivity and improved social relations in comparison to children who seldom ate school breakfast.

The word "breakfast" literally means to break fast. As we know, fasting is the act of not eating over a period of time. We
may not think of it this way, but we virtually fast while we sleep -- even if we dream about food. The act of eating breakfast is literally breaking the fast!

The National Weight Control Registry is a database of more than 3,000 people who have lost at least 60 pounds and kept it off for at least 6 years. Seventy eight percent of these people in the registry found that eating breakfast daily was an
excellent weight control strategy along with eating a low-fat diet and exercising for an hour or more every day.

Cereal is the number one food bought in supermarkets today. The first breakfast cereal was created in 1863 in New York by a vegetarian.

So What Is a Healthy Breakfast Anyway?

Is it pancakes slathered in maple syrup or green eggs and ham? Well, first and foremost, a healthy breakfast should be a
balance of carbohydrates, protein and fats. Fiber is also very important. The protein can come from meat, eggs, beans or soy
products. Fiber can be found in whole grain cereals, grains or in fruits. Sure, every once in a while you can treat yourself
to biscuits, pancakes or pastries for special occasions but on a daily basis, they should be avoided along with sugary
cereals and white breads. These foods will bring insanity to your blood sugar level, jolting you out of the Zone. Those
sorts of foods are digested quickly and will leave you hungry and tired in a just a couple of hours.

Research done by the Cardiff University School of Psychology, LED BY Professor Andrew Smith has shown that eating breakfast helps children function better in school than those who skip the first meal of the day. Dr. Smith says that it is
clear that starting the day with cereal enhances mental, cognitive and physical ability. The children are less emotionally distressed, less tired and less anxious. The study examined 213 children from 4 - 11 years old.

The results revealed children who start the day with cereal are:

9 percent more alert

11 percent less emotionally distressed

13 percent less tired

17 percent less anxious

10 percent less likely to suffer memory and attention span difficulties, than those that have no breakfast

33 percent less likely to suffer from stomach complaints.

Schaumburg Restaurants

I have lived in Schaumburg Illinois for over 30 years and have eaten at almost every restaurant in Schaumburg. If you are out of towners or live in Schaumburg you will find you answers here.

Breakfast Pizza

If you are looking for the best breakfast you will ever have go to Richard Walkers located 1/4 mile north of Golf Road on Roselle Rd. You want to order an apple pancake and plan to be full for the rest of the day. Every thing at Richard Walkers is great to eat and the service is outstanding. On the bossiest days (Sat. & Sun) you should plan to wait about 15 to 20 minutes. Do not stay in Schaumburg Illinois and not pass up Richard Walkers for breakfast.

If your in Chicago land you need to have deep dish pizza. The restaurant in Schaumburg for Pizza is Lou Malnatis located at the corner of Schaumburg Rd and Roselle rd. They have outstanding deep-dish pizza that will melt in your mouth. I have never tasted any other food besides the pizza but it is a good family restaurant.

The best Mexican food in Schaumburg is served up at El Meson located less than a quarter mile west of Roselle Rd on Schaumburg Rd in the small strip mall. Their Margaritas and Sangria are awesome; they will not reveal their recipe for the Sangria if asked. Food is great but the service is sometimes slow.

If your looking for Italian food in Schaumburg then go to Maggianos located by Streets of WoodField. When you walk into Maggianos your mouth will start watering with the smells of garlic bread and Pasta. They have good service the only draw back is that parking and the wait are horrible on the weekends.

The hands down sea food king in Schaumburg is Shaws Crab house located in Streets of Woodfield. All I can say is the is your around for crab fest or lobster fest bring a bigger belt because you will eat a lot. Great Service and great sea food don't miss out on Shaws Crab.

Tips For the Perfect Pizza Dough

Making your own pizza dough is not only less expensive than relying on the store-bought or take-out types, but it is also a great way to enjoy a variety of delicious pizza pies. Moreover, while you do not need any special culinary skills to make the perfect pizza dough, there are still a few tips you will definitely want to keep in mind.

First, always preheat your oven as directed in the dough recipe you are following. Average temperatures for making pizza dough range from 400 to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Exact cooking times will depend on the number of toppings used as well as the desired thickness of the crust or dough.

When kneading dough, you may need to use some extra flour to keep it pliable and easy to work with, but do not add too much or it will become dry and crack. Alternatively, if your pizza dough feels more like cake or cookie batter, it is too wet and will need more flour.

Always add extra water and flour in very small amounts.

When it comes time to adding the toppings, do not put too many in the center of the rolled out dough. When pizza is cut into slices, the center of the pie is where the smallest part of each slice will be. For the best results, distribute your toppings evenly around the pie.

Recipe for Easy Pizza Dough

What You Need

1 cup warm water
2 teaspoons honey
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon yeast
3 1/2 cups flour
2 tablespoons olive oil

How to Make It

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. In a medium sized mixing bowl, add the warm water, honey, and salt and stir together. Add the yeast to the water mixture and allow to sit for 10 minutes.

Next, gradually add the flour, then the olive oil and mix together with a spoon. When the mixture becomes too thick to continue mixing with the spoon, begin to knead the dough with your hands.

Continue kneading the dough until you have a round, smooth ball. Put the dough in a large bowl and coat with olive oil before covering with plastic wrap and set on the counter. Allow the dough to rise inside the bowl in room temperature for about an hour.

After the dough has risen, push down into the center of the ball to deflate the dough. Then, recover the dough before allowing it to sit and rise again for another hour.

On a lightly floured surface, begin stretching the dough out into a round, pie shape pulling from the center of the dough ball working your way out. Use a rolling pin to flatten down the dough until it is about a quarter of an inch thick, unless you prefer thicker or thinner crust, of course.

Using a toothpick or a fork, poke some holes throughout the dough to avoid bubbles from forming as it is baking.

Now you are ready to add your sauce and toppings. The more toppings you use the longer the bake time will be. For two toppings, bake your dough for about 20 minutes, or until the crust turns a light brown color, and then enjoy your homemade pizza.

You will never want to order take-out again using a simple yet tasty pizza dough recipe that everyone in the family will love. Experiment with different pizza recipes varying the toppings, sauces, and types of dough you use to create interesting and flavorful creations.

Are Wood Fired Pizza Ovens a Good Choice?

When you dream of pizza, do you see the traditional Neapolitan style before your eyes? Covered in a tangy sauce and maybe buffalo mozzarella? Do you hear the crunch of the crispy but tender crust? Smell the fragrant oils and basil? And are you disheartened when you learn how difficult it is to find a place that makes that good old rustic homemade pizza?

Well, why not invest in your own wood fired pizza oven? These ovens have been around since the dawn of time, it seems. From the ancient Romans to the current artisan bakeries, they have served to bring delicious baked items to the masses. The first step in deciding whether or not wood fired pizza ovens are ideal for your circumstances is to determine how much room you have and where you want to house the stove.

Breakfast Pizza

These stoves come in a variety of styles - some for indoor use, some for outdoor. Depending on the amount of room you have inside, you might want to choose the smaller, precast refractory oven, which has taken much of the care and hassle out of operating these ovens, over the actual hand cast brick oven. If you are planning on installing an outdoor oven, then you have more room and more options.

There are different stands, oven doors and chimneys to choose from as well as different materials. You can get instructions to build your own or choose from many of the kits that are available in the retail market. Secondly, your budget should be considered. Obviously, the more you are prepared to spend on your wood fired pizza oven, the larger your oven can be.

The brick ovens are usually built by hand and are therefore unique but more expensive. In an outdoor setting, you could even create an entire rustic kitchen outside which could include the new generation of outdoor ready kitchen appliances like stainless steel grills, refrigerators, sinks, heaters and kitchen cabinets. With all this innovation, do not forget that your goal is fresh, hand made, traditional, wood fired pizza.

Once you determine your budget and space, you will want to find some great ideas, along with instructions for installing and buying kits for wood fired pizza ovens.

Gnocchi Covered in Maple Sausage Gravy - Oh My God This is Delicious

It just doesn't get much easier then this. Originally, I was going to make sausage gravy and biscuits for breakfast one Sunday morning, but I was voted against buy the family, because they all decided they wanted French Toast instead, so guess what we had for breakfast? That's right, we had French toast, but the upside is, I had the stuff for Sausage Gravy sitting there waiting to be created into some other new and exciting dish.

So that evening, as I sat there wondering what I was going to do for dinner, it suddenly hit me, and here is what I had to make it happen. If you read my article describing what a Gnocchi is, then you are up to speed on that, if you haven't, then I suggest you do so. If you already know what they are, then read on and try this. If you don't care either way, read on and try it anyways.

Here is what you will need:

1 Tube of Jimmy Dean Maple flavored Breakfast Sausage, or similar.
2 Pouches of McCormick Country Sausage Gravy dry mix
4 Cups of Water
2 16-Ounces Gia Russa Gnocchi with Potato, or equivalent, (you can order right from Amazon.com)
1 tbsp of oil (cooking not motor) what ever you have
Seasonings Salt, Pepper to taste and any other seasonings you may like

It couldn't be much easier, get a large pot, fill it with water and add your oil to it, this is to ensure your Gnocchi doesn't end up sticking together. I also like to open the package of Gnocchi and dump them into a strainer and break them apart, as they are vacuum packed tightly together and they tend to stick together, which can make them cook unevenly, which you don't want to happen. Once you have it on the stove, turn it on high and wait for the water to start to boil.

Then grab a large skillet or frying pan and open your tube of Sweet Maple sausage and put it in the skillet and turn it on high. Do your best to break it up into nice little pieces as you cook it, sort of the way you would want ground beef to look if you were making Sloppy Joe's or something along those lines.

While it is cooking, grab a measuring cup and use it to measure 4 cups of water and dump them into a large bowl, obviously large enough to hold the 4 cups of water. Using a wire whisk (a fork can work, but a whisk is better), slowly add the content from the two McCormick Sausage Gravy mix pouches into the water and mix thoroughly. When the Sausage is fully cooked, slowly pour this water mix directly into the skillet with the sausage and leave on high, being sure to stir frequently.

By now, the water should be boiling in your big pot so take your Gnocchi and carefully dump them into the boiling water. The will initially sink to the bottom of the pot. Stir at first to make sure none of them stick to the bottom of the pot, but then let them boil for a few minutes. They will not take long, when you see them floating at the top, they are done. Just dump them right back into that strainer you used to separate them when you emptied the package of them in the first place. You can then give them a little rinse with warm water to wash away any excess starch. You don't have to, but I usually do.

By now your gravy should be nice and thick, so turn off the stove and you are ready. Grab a few spoonfuls of the Gnocchi and put them on a plate or in a bowl and spoon a generous portion of the Sausage Gravy over the top of them, and season to taste. Nothing left but Good Eats and Enjoy!

How to Make Tasty Pizza Sauce

Picking the proper ingredients to make an excellent pizza sauce can easily raise your home made pizzas to the world of gourmet eating. Tomatoes make up the foundation pizza sauce. Fresh new plum tomatoes are meaty and have customarily been employed for tomato sauce of most kinds. As soon as are picked, they will have to be blanched, peeled, de-seeded, as well as chopped prior to cooking. In case fresh tomatoes aren't available, it's possible to use canned tomatoes. They are offered all year round.

What kind of canned tomatoes should I use?

Breakfast Pizza

You can easily find canned tomatoes at your local grocery store. You can find them whole, cut, chopped, or even smashed. Tomato puree and also paste is available too. They may be more concentrated. Mixing both types could make for a terrific sauce. Should you have some fresh tomatoes, you can include them too. All tomatoes ought to be bright red-colored once the can is opened up. A darker color is an indication that applied an excessive amount of temperature during the processing, and an orange tone indicates the actual tomatoes were under ripe.

No matter what tomatoes you've chosen, they will have to be cooked together in a skillet. Cook the blend over a low temperature, along with regular stirring. Keep observing the pot to ensure the sauce will not cook overlong.

What Seasonings Should I Use?

Using a solid tomato base, all that is required are spices and herbs to make yummy pizza sauce recipes. Pepper, salt plus some garlic would be the essential ingredients to complete your sauce. Somewhat sugar comes in helpful too to help reduce the level of acidity of the tomatoes. In the event you used fresh, lower acid tomatoes, this is probably not necessary.

Herbs are typically added to pizza sauce. Oregano is regarded as the popular herb. Marjoram is comparable to oregano, which enable it to be replaced in a crunch. Basil is one more classic Italian herb that is often found in sauce. A few chefs include bay leaf that is removed before use, rosemary, tarragon, parsley, thyme, as well as other cooking herbs.

If you want your sauce hot and spicy, put in a little cayenne pepper, hot paprika, or perhaps red pepper flakes. Keep in mind that just a little will go a long way. Just a little touch brings some punch to your sauce. In case some family members are usually not really into spice, it is possible to keep your red pepper flakes available for being used as desired by your diners when they get seated for the meal.

Olive oil is a classic Italian ingredient. Just a little olive oil in your sauce will bring that bit of authenticity to the flavor. If you want full olive flavor, pick an olive oil that have a green color.

Bulking Up Your Breakfast

Breakfast is called "the most important meal of the day", yet many of us eat an inadequate morning meal or skip it altogether. Perhaps you are pressed for time or don't care for the usual quick breakfast fare. Tired of cereal, toast, and packaged yogurt, but are at a loss when it comes to thinking of something better to try? Check out these quick, innovative breakfast recipes to get you going in the morning.

Breakfast Tacos

Breakfast Pizza

Breakfast tacos are fast, easy, and cheap to make. What more could you ask for? For a simple breakfast taco, scramble one or two eggs and pan-fry (or microwave) a few strips of bacon or ham, then wrap in a tortilla warmed on the stove. A slice of avocado adds flavor and texture and makes for a delicious combination. For a Tex-Mex twist, top your tortilla with a spoonful of your favorite salsa.

Smoothies

It's hard to think of a breakfast that is faster and easier to transport than a smoothie. Gather together a few pieces of fruit, a half cup of yogurt or milk, a half cup of ice, and blend together. You can add almost anything to a smoothie, including cereal, berries, peanut butter, honey, chocolate, and more. Get creative and make up your own recipe by blending together your favorite ingredients.

Loaded Waffles

A waffle maker allows you to make a delicious breakfast on the fly. Find a waffle mix that you like to create the batter, ladle a spoonful onto the waffle maker, then mix in some fruit chunks, raisins, or chocolate chips. Most waffle makers beep when the waffle is done, so while they are cooking you can make your coffee or finish putting on your shoes if you're in a hurry. When the timer goes off, you'll have a perfectly cooked waffle with your favorite ingredients mixed in. Top with syrup or wrap in a paper towel and take it to go.

Garlic Chicken Alfredo Sauce For Your Pizza Or Pasta

This Alfredo sauce recipe is easy to make. This variation of a very tasty recipe is one that is popular in my household.  Just add a chicken breast with lots of garlic and you have a great tasting garlic chicken Alfredo sauce for your pizza. You should be careful in the preparation of this topping. If you cook the cheese too long it will begin to separate and not look so appetizing. It still tastes great, but it should look creamy and mouth watering.

This Homemade Alfredo Sauce also makes a great sauce for your pasta. You can use a fettuccine noodle and create a wonderful tasty Fettuccine Alfredo dish. Be sure you cook your noodles (Al Dente) not to too soft. If you are making pasta you can also try adding some butter to make your sauce creamier.

Experiment with your own herbs and spices. No recipe is cast in stone. We all have different tastes and you might come up with your own very tasty and unique Alfredo Sauce.

Ingredients:

2 cups of half and half

3-4 cloves of fresh garlic chopped

1/2 cup of Romano cheese

1/2 cup of Asiago

(You can substitute Parmesan-Reggiano or any of your favorite Italian cheeses)

1 teaspoon salt,

1 teaspoon oregano,

1 tsp garlic powder

A dash of nutmeg

2 tablespoons flour

Pepper and salt to taste

2 tablespoons olive oil

Cooking

Chop your chicken into bite size pieces and gently sauté in olive oil until lightly brown and remove from the heat

Start sauteing the chopped garlic in a tablespoon of olive oil until lightly brown. Be careful not to burn your garlic, it will make your entire Alfredo sauce bitter. Add all the other ingredients except the cheese.

Heat the creamy mixture to a boil and then let simmer until it thickens. Add your cooked chicken to your mixture and stir until warmed. The last thing you do is add all of the cheese and then top on your pizza or fettuccine noodles.

The Best Ways To Enjoy Pizza

Pizza is one of the very few dishes that do not require any type of side dish or appetizer in order for it to be considered a full meal. However, there are several types of foods commonly eaten with pizza that you may want to have the next time you make a homemade pie.

Chicken wings, fried mushrooms, mozzarella cheese sticks, onion rings, nachos, salads, and a variety of stuffed peppers are just some of the appetizers and side dishes that go great with pizza.

Eating pizza is largely a matter of personal preference as some people eat slices beginning with the narrow end while others prefer to start with the crust. Others fold their slices of pizza over in a taco-like fashion and some enjoy theirs with a variety of dipping sauces.

Likewise, some aficionados not only eat their pieces of pizza piping hot from the oven but also cold and right from the refrigerator as a delicious leftover.

Turkey Bacon Parmesan Pizza Recipe

What You Need

3/4 cup water, warm to hot
1 teaspoon sugar
2 tablespoons butter, melted
2-1/2 cups flour
1 tablespoon yeast
1 tablespoon cornmeal
2 cups turkey bacon, fried
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 cup pizza sauce
12 ounces mozzarella cheese, shredded
1/2 cup red onions, sliced
1/2 cup bell peppers, chopped
1/4 teaspoon oregano
1/8 teaspoon basil
2 tablespoons parmesan cheese

How to Make It

In a large mixing bowl, combine the water, sugar, and butter and mix together. Add in half of the flour and stir well. Add in the rest of the flour along with the tablespoon of yeast and stir until a doughy mixture begins to form.

Knead the dough for 8 to10 minutes or until it is smooth with an elastic consistency. Place the kneaded dough in a bowl and grease the top with a little bit of butter. Cover the bowl with a few tea towels and set in a warm place to rise for about 45 minutes to an hour.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

After the dough has risen, punch it down with your hand and knead until all of the air bubbles are gone.

Fry slices of turkey bacon in a skillet and then slice or crumble into pieces until you have about 2 cups.

Liberally coat a large, round pizza pan with butter and press the dough down onto the pan. Lift up one half of the pizza dough and sprinkle half of the cornmeal on the pan. Repeat the process with the other side.

Sprinkle salt and pepper and spread the sauce evenly on the pizza dough. Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese on the pizza and then add the sliced red onions, chopped bell pepper, and fried turkey bacon.

Add the oregano, basil, and parmesan cheese to the pizza last and bake for 10 minutes. Rotate the pizza completely and bake for another 5 to 7 minutes or until the top has just started to turn brown.

After baking, turn the heat off, open the door, and allow the pizza to sit on the rack for at least 10 minutes or until ready to serve.

Serves 4 to 6.

The pizza recipes that become your favorites will probably be those that are easy to prepare and contain the freshest of ingredients. Most all types of types of pizza should be served hot from the oven and sliced as quickly as possible to avoid pulling off the cheeses.

Breakfast and Snack Ideas for Picky Eaters

Many of our readers ask, "How do I get my kids to eat? They are so picky and I've run out of ideas..."

I think it's in a kid's nature to be picky. It's funny that kids will frown upon anything new. Our children will eat the same thing almost every day and then one day say, "I don't like sloppy Joe's". Our oldest son eats pizza but does not like sausage pizza. One day recently, he tried the sausage and loved it. He said that he loved the little meatballs. When Mike told him it was good to see him eat sausage, he suddenly wouldn't eat it. Later, we decided it was better to let him call them meatballs if that's what it took to get him to eat it! Let this be a lesson to you - If you give the kids zucchini bread, just tell them that it is "bread"! ;-)

Breakfast Pizza

Kids eating habits could send a family to the poor house! Between pop-tarts, fruit chews, juices boxes and containers of cool applesauce it would be easy to spend the entire month's grocery budget in one week. Here are some tips to help you find something they will eat while hanging on to some of that cash in your pocket.

Breakfast:

Are you being squeezed? - The USDA recommends two 8 oz. (1 cup) glasses of milk per day for a child. If you give your kids more than two cups a day, everything over the 2 cups is just calories, and expensive calories at that. The same is true of juice. The USDA recommends 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day for kids. Did you know that for children under age five, 3/4 cup of juice is one serving of fruit? How often do you fill a glass to the top with juice for your child only to find that the child doesn't drink most of it? Limit the amount of juice served to one or two small glasses a day and serve the rest of their fruit and vegetables in whole form. Whole fruits are more healthy for them than juice.

French Toast Sticks - After cooking french toast, cut each piece into 4 strips. Kids love to dip these in syrup.

Present oatmeal in a fancy glass such as a sundae dish. Place some granola, fruit, honey, brown sugar or nuts on top.

Stir any of the following into oatmeal:

sugar cinnamon and sugar brown sugar butter or margarine molasses maple syrup applesauce chopped apples dried apples raisins berries bananas chopped peaches jam or jelly plain or fruit yogurt wheat germ dark brown sugar and 1 drop of maple extract makes oatmeal taste just like the store bought instant oatmeal
Snack Ideas:

Have a snack sitting at the kitchen table for the kids when they come home from school. This way they won't be grouchy in the afternoon from being hungry. This will also prevent them from digging though the kitchen cabinets looking for something themselves and messing up your neat, well-organized pantry. It is also the perfect time for you to sit and visit with them about their day at school.

To discourage bad snack habits, don't buy unhealthy snacks or keep them in the house.

Present your snacks with a plate, place mat, napkin and maybe a flower from the garden. This way your snacks always look inviting.

Have jars sitting on the counter with sunflower seeds, raisins, granola, prunes or peanuts for the children. If they see healthy snacks they're more likely to want them.

Try these snacks on your kids:

Fresh fruit Hard-boiled eggs Apples, cut into quarters, with core removed Popcorn balls Popcorn Bagels Muffins Dried apples or bananas Breadsticks Oranges, peeled and quartered Pumpkin bread Banana bread Zucchini bread Bananas Crackers and cheese Frozen grapes Veggies with ranch dressing Celery sticks, spread with peanut butter Cherry tomatoes Cheese Strawberry leather Cookies Puddings Yogurt Popsicles Homemade granola bars Beef jerky Pretzels Tortillas with cream cheese Peanut butter snacks Yogurt with fruit or wheat germ added Milk Chocolate milk Cocoa Creamy Orange Shake Milk shake Fruit shakes Apples, quartered and cored with 1 tsp. peanut butter on each quarter Bananas sliced in half and spread with peanut butter Bread or toast cut into quarters and spread with jelly, jam, peanut butter, spiced honey or honey butter Crackers spread with peanut butter and jelly or jam Place some peanut butter and honey on a pancake and roll up for a snack. This is great for leftover pancakes.

What's Breakfast Without Bacon?

It turns out-more healthy!

All cured meats, including breakfast sausage, bacon, luncheon meats, and hot dogs, contain nitrites and nitrates. They're added to processed meats to prevent botulism and enhance the taste and color of the meat. Without nitrates processed meats would be brown, just like cooked hamburger.

Once inside the body, they can form nitrosamines, a cancer-causing chemical. These carcinogenic compounds have been associated with cancer. They have also been linked with leukemia and ADD/ADHD in children.

Between 1980 and 1987, a study conducted in Los Angeles found a relationship between the consumption of certain foods and the risk of leukemia with children under the age of 10. Results indicated that children, who ate an excess of 12 hot dogs per month, had nine times the normal risk of developing childhood leukemia.

In 2007, researchers in Denver found that children, whose mothers consumed one or more hot dogs per week during pregnancy, had double the risk of developing brain tumors, and children, who consumed one or more hot dogs per week were also at higher risk of brain cancer.

Nitrites are found naturally in many green vegetables, especially spinach, celery, and green lettuce. However, the consumption of vegetables is effective in reducing the risk of cancer. Nitrites found in whole foods are managed differently in the body. It's the synergy of various compounds, which makes the difference between harmful and healthful. Nitrite containing vegetables also have vitamins C and D, which inhibit the formation of carcinogenic compounds. Therefore, vegetables are quite safe and healthy, and actually reduce your cancer risk.

For health avoid eating meat products with nitrates. Children, who have small tummies, and the picky eater, who is consuming limited foods, shouldn't eat meats containing nitrates. Always look for nitrate-free meats. In addition, these products usually are high in fat, and the fat is where contaminates are stored.

Food additives are problematic for everyone, but for the child or adult with ADD/ADHD, avoidance of food additives is imperative. There's sound evidence that food plays an important part in controlling the symptoms of ADD/ADHD. Food additives such as artificial colorings, preservatives, MSG, and nitrates. Of course, avoidance of junk foods, trans fat, and sugar, especially High Fructose Corn Syrup, is also very important.

My daughter, Jenny, was extremely sensitive to food additives, including nitrates. Thirty years ago, her pediatrician thought I was crazy, when I mentioned that food additives made her ADD symptoms worse. Today, parents, who suspect artificial ingredients in food are affecting their childrens' behavior, can now point to proof. New research, by Jim Stevenson, a professor of psychology at England's University of Southampton, reported in a British medical journal, that a variety of common food dyes and sodium benzoate, an ingredient in many soft drinks, fruit juices, and salad dressings, causes some children to become more hyperactive than usual. The younger the children, the more they found they negatively responded to the additives.

Be on the lookout for nitrates: All prepackaged lunch meats contain nitrates. If lunch meet is pink it has nitrates. Ask the deli counter clerk to check the nutrition label for nitrates. Some deli meats may be nitrate-free. Frozen turkey breakfast and turkey Italian sausage packaged in a tube usually don't contain nitrates.

Most pork products (all cured meats, hot dogs, bacon, sausage, pepperoni, salami, etc.) use nitrates to preserve color and freshness. Look for alternatives. Incorporate easy-to-make egg, tuna, and chicken salad sandwiches in your lunches. Of course, the standby peanut butter and jelly sandwich is easy and always nitrate-free.

When you have a craving for a hot dog, be sure to buy a brand that doesn't contain nitrates. These are usually found in whole food stores. Or when a delivery pizza is the answer to dinner, order a veggie or hamburger pizza, leaving off pepperoni, ham, and other processed meats with nitrates.

Take the time to teach your children to enjoy whole foods. If you set good eating habits from the beginning with your kids, you'll avoid ever having a picky eater. Learning to eat a healthy diet starting early in childhood will decrease the likelihood of your child becoming obese and getting diabetes, heart disease, or cancer.
