Set Your Kids A Good Example When It Comes To Eating Habits!

Parents often teach their children poor food habits. For example, while a busy morning, when everybody is running late, there is microscopic time to think about production and eating breakfast, although it is the most important meal of the day. So parents will skip the children's morning meal and tell them to eat well at lunch when they are at school.

When lunchtime arrives, the parent is still not very hungry so he or she will eat a snack bar and a diet soda and go back to work. It may be that the children have done something similar while their lunch period. When it is time to make dinner, the family is rushing around, trying to make sure that everybody gets to institution or completes some chore like picking up the dry cleaning. On the way to an errand, the parent realizes that supper needs to be prepared. Short on time and energy, the parent decides to stop on the way home for a pizza instead. Or perhaps the family would rather have hamburgers and fries.

Breakfast Pizza

While choosing what to have for dinner, the children are getting very hungry. If there is a snack food dispenser nearby, they are likely to load up on soft drinks and candy. After production the final stop to pick up a child from institution or wherever, everybody is in the car and ready to get home. The parent has decided that pizza is the right choice and has already called in an order so that it will be ready for pick up.

Unfortunately, this scenario is typical of the daily food rituals experienced by many families. Most Americans spend their day rushing around with microscopic belief to their nutritional needs. They rely on convenience foods without knowing that these short cuts to meals give exactly the wrong message about food and nutrition to their children.

Everyone reads articles about good nutrition and how it impacts overall health. everybody has made the association between eating approved foods and living longer and healthier lives. Few habitancy actually take activity on the basis of this information, however, and no one thinks about how much of every day goes by without any nutritious food being consumed at all.

As children grow, parents may wonder why they seem pale and less than healthy. Parents must recognize that children live in a stressful environment, one without exercise, and one that imposes unhealthy eating habits.

It is a parental responsibility to ensure that children are taught about good morals, work ethics, and family values. It is also important to teach them the point of taking care of their health. They cannot have a good potential of life if they are not salutary enough to enjoy it.

Not Eating Breakfast Leaves Your Brain Craving High Calorie Foods

You may have already heard that not eating breakfast, often called the most important meal of the day, isn't a good idea if you're trying to lose weight. But in the rush to get out the door in the morning, many of us just don't have the time, even though studies have shown those who eat breakfast stay slimmer and consume fewer calories during the course of a day.

Now new research has hit upon the explanation.

The work involved 20 healthy, non-obese subjects who skipped breakfast before a fMRI scan.

During the test, the subjects looked at photos of both high and low calorie foods. High calorie choices included pizza, chocolate and cake. The low calorie foods were things like veggies, salad and fish.

Using scans known as function magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) that help doctors look at blood flow in the brain and how it increases in response to brain activity, the researchers were able to compare how breakfast eating vs. breakfast skipping affected the reward center of the brain.

The reward center is known to be a part of the brain involved in keeping track of the pleasure and reward that comes from food, as well as igniting the motivation to eat. The taste, smell and sight of food also serve to activate these reward centers.

What the team found was that the reward center of the brain of the breakfast skippers lit up more vividly when these subjects saw a high calorie food as opposed when they were looking at a healthier alternative.

High calorie foods also were on top of the list of favorites the breakfast skipping subjects listed when asked to rank foods they found most appealing.

Just the opposite was true when it came to the subjects who ate breakfast first, then had the fMRI 90 minutes later.

This time, the reward center of the brain didn't show any greater activity at the sight of the high calorie foods as when looking at the low calorie ones. What's more, the subjects didn't rate the higher calorie foods any more appealing than the lower calorie ones.

"Our results support the advice for eating a healthy breakfast as part of the dietary prevention and treatment of obesity," says Tony Goldstone, MD, PhD, a consultant endocrinologist with the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre at Imperial College, London.

"When people skip meals, especially breakfast, changes in brain activity in response to food may hinder weight loss and even promote weight gain."

Skipping breakfast causes your metabolic rate to slow down while your blood sugar also drops.

This brings on feelings of hunger that set you up for impulse eating later on in the morning, at lunch or dinner.

Eating breakfast at the start of your day gives the body the fuel it needs to feel satisfied, so that you're less likely to overeat, or eat on impulse for the rest of the day.

Here are some quick-to-make, healthy breakfast suggestions to try:

- Milk and whole-grain cereal
- Instant oatmeal topped with raisins and milk
- Whole-grain granola topped with fruit and yogurt
- Peanut butter on whole-wheat toast or a bagel
- Fruit smoothie made with yogurt
- Cheese and whole-grain crackers
- Energy bars so long as you read the labels - some of these have little fiber and as many calories as a candy bar.

Future studies in this area might even uncover ways to prevent the activation of the brain's reward center so that high calorie choices don't seem so appealing.

In the meantime, if you're trying to lose weight or just keep your weight under control not eating breakfast is not an option, as a healthy breakfast including natural sources of protein will help you feel fuller, longer.

Healthy Eating for Teenagers - How Can the Kids Eat Healthy?

Are the kids rarely getting any healthy meals? Are they always with their friends hanging out at cafes and fast food restaurants? Are you worried that they might not be getting enough nutrients to protect them from diseases? Well, your kids are in danger of getting sick if they won't start eating right and living healthy. Teenagers need all the energy that they can get to be able to get through all the things that they do every day. This means that they should eat and live healthy. So what is healthy eating for teenagers all about? Here's some advice on healthy eating for teenagers.

Healthy Eating for Teenagers Tip 1: Never Skip Breakfast no Matter What

Tell your kids that they have to eat breakfast always. Their morning meals should include protein and complex carbohydrates. There are breakfast recipes that they would surely enjoy. You may fry an egg with olive oil, include a few slices of lean ham and a cup of mashed potatoes. If they are in a hurry for school, you can give them a bowl of whole grain cereals with a glass of skimmed milk. It is important for the kids to have breakfast because without it, they won't have the energy for the rest of the day.

Healthy Eating for Teenagers Tip 2: Store Healthy Snacks at Home

The kids will definitely be hungry by the time they get home from school. Since they are that hungry, they will eat whatever they see on the shelf or in the fridge. So make sure that you have a lot of healthy snacks at home. You can store yogurt that are packed in snack sizes or some whole wheat bars. It will even be better if you can make homemade snacks for them. You can make fruit salad or healthy sandwiches. They will love those too!

Healthy Eating for Teenagers Tip 3: Eat dinner as a family

Make sure that you find time to eat with your kids at dinner. Eating with them will not only make them eat healthier, they will also become emotionally healthy. There are some studies that show that kids who rarely eat with their family tend to develop emotional issues and eating disorders than those who eat with their parents and family members regularly. Besides that, eating dinner together brings the whole family closer. Remember to make healthy meals for supper. Since everyone in the family is eating together, make the most out of it by preparing something delicious and nutritious.

Healthy Eating for Teenagers Tip 4: Eat in moderation

You don't want your kids to suffer from obesity do you? Well you should tell them to watch what they eat. Eating fries or burgers once in a while is fine but eating them every day is a different story. If too much of a good thing is already bad, then imagine how worse it can get if they are having too much of the bad. Make sure that you always remind them of what the healthy food choices are. Of course you can never control what they want to eat but if you remind them patiently about it, I am sure that they would follow your advice somehow.

Tips to Gain Weight - Eating 5-6 Meals a Day

If you are seeing to gain weight you need to start eating more. Period. You can't expect to gain too much weight if you are sticking to the 3 meals a day routine. Try eating heartier meals 5 or 6 times a day and you'll start to see some real results. Those that want to lose weight are told to eat this many times per day, but with much smaller portions. When you are trying to gain weight you will want to eat until you feel full many times per day. Here's how a typical day would go for you when trying to lose weight.

Breakfast - You'll want to get an early start and get the fat advent in. Grab the primary bowl of cereal, but top it off with a 3 egg omelet, bacon, and hash browns. The protein from the bacon and the eggs will help with your muscle growth, the fiber from the cereal will help all get absorbed into the body, and the carbohydrates from the potatoes and cereal will help you with your weight gain goal. Top it all off with a large glass of orange juice for a good dose of sugar calories.

Breakfast Pizza

Breakfast 2 - Once you start to feel a minute hungry again, top off your first morning meal by eating all you didn't eat earlier. A bagel and cream cheese would be good. You could also substitute that with toast and peanut butter. The fat from the peanut butter and cream cheese is what your body needs to help all metabolize better. You don't have to eat a ton at this meal, just be sure to hold you over until lunch time, and curb any feelings of hunger for the next hour or two.

Lunch - This is a great time to fit in all the things you've been craving. Any high calorie, high carbohydrate food will work. Pizza might be the number one weight gaining instrument. It's got tons of carbohydrates in the crust, as well as lots of heavy fat in the cheese. To keep costs down, you can visit a pizza buffet, there are many of them in your local area that will be less than ten dollars. If you do go with the pizza buffet, be sure to have a big salad with it to help keep things tantalizing straight through your system. Pass on the regular lettuce and pile on the Romaine. Remember, even though you're at a buffet, you should not stuff yourself. Just eat until you feel full.

Lunch 2 - Once you start advent down from the first lunch it's time to eat again. If you have anyone you couldn't halt at lunch now is the time to eat it. You aren't seeing to stuff yourself, just make sure you can get straight through until dinner time. This is a great time to have a weight gaining shake.

Dinner - Red meat is your key here. Have a steak and a baked potato. Pile on the veggies too like broccoli, peas, and green peppers. By incorporating those three things with your meal, you'll get a good number of fats, carbs and proteins. Just be sure to have good sized portions that leave you full but not stuffed.

Bedtime Snack - This is when you should have an additional one weight gainer shake as you don't want to eat any solid foods before bed.

Eating Out Gluten Free at Buffalo Phil's Pizza and Grille in Wisconsin Dells

Going on a weekend away with our son, Jac is a challenging task due to the fact that he has a very specific diet. He cannot eat anything containing gluten.

During this single weekend, we decided to stay at the Kalahari Resort in Lake Delton which farranging was a fantastic experience. The Kalahari has a bar and grill restaurant off the waterpark which offered some items that Jac could. We also decided to take a cooler with us on this trip and filled it with some items which made it easier to eat morning meal and lunch in our room. We brought sandwich bread, lunch meat, cheese slices, chips, milk and cereal.

Breakfast Pizza

On the second night at the Kalahari, we decided to go out to eat and that we would try Buffalo Phil's Pizza and Grill. Regularly we do more investigate before we go to eat anywhere, but the trip came together so fast that it did not leave much time to look into many restaurants.

When the waitress came to our table, I asked her for a gluten free menu or, if there was no gluten free menu, what was available for Jac to eat? She informed us that she would talk to the chef and give us our options.

We ordered Jac a steak with a baked potato and made sure to tell the waitress to make sure the chef cleans the part of the grill before he cooks the steak and why that was necessary.

The steak and baked potato were great and Jac did not have any problems with cross contamination. We found out on this trip that even though a restaurant does not offer gluten free items or have a gluten free menu, it is still inherent to get a safe meal out.

Mother Knew Best – Eating Like a Kid Again

So continuing on this quest I have this year to harness the energy I once had as a kid, I am proclaiming another goal. Eat better. As a 26 year old, who's on the go all the time, occasionally living paycheck to paycheck and who, to be quite honest, fears her own cooking, my eating habits are not the best. In fact I usually expect a weekly lecture from my mother asking me if I'm eating well and reminding me to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables everyday. But what can I say? I don't have the time nor the desire to grocery shop or cook. Usually I grab a granola bar for breakfast or skip it altogether, I eat out almost every lunch and my dinners usually consist of cheese and crackers or a frozen pizza.

Eating on a budget in Italy, Spain and Portugal

Eating in some parts of Europe can be as cheap as in the Us or Canada. Other parts can be indeed expensive, but if you look around, you're sure to find something to assuage those hunger pangs.

In Italy a good meal is first an antipasto, then a pasta dish, then a meat entrée, then a salad, perhaps some fruit or cheese - or both, and perhaps a nice Chianti. A good meal, and good and expensive, unfortunately, in every major city. What to do?

Breakfast Pizza

Try to find a small bistro that will serve a pasta dish with a salad or soup only. The pasta dish will be big sufficient servings of spaghetti, lasagne, etc., with a generous helping of salad or perhaps a minestrone soup to satisfy the hungriest appetite. These places go by names like osteria, tavola calda, rosticceria, pizzeria or trattoria. A pizza rustica is all the time a good buy, they sell pizza by the weight. You point at the one you like best, give them a amount ("due cento" two hundred grams, is a fair amount), they'll take your money, and heat it up for you, and you can walk down to a bench in the square, munching on your pizza slice. Panini is a form of grilled sandwich often with ham and cheese, usually found in bars.

At restaurants ask for the menu del giorno, menu of the day, if there's a good priced meal to be had it will be listed here. You'll often see "pane e coperto" on menus, it's an extra fee for bread and - yes - cover charge. Servizio incluso means aid included, but they won't frown at a small tip; Italians seldom tip, North Americans nearly all the time tip.

On the streets, find an ice cream vendor; it's called gelato, and it is perhaps the best ice cream anywhere. Coffee can be had in many ways, the popular is cappuccino, just like at Starbucks. In the morning you can order a "caffé con latte grande" to get you started.

Here are a few key phrases to help you eat well in Italian: Food=cibo breakfast=colazione lunch=pranzo dinner=cena bread=pane cheese=formaggio soup=zuppa or minestra salad=insalata meat=carni chicken=pollo fish=pesce fruit=frutta vegetables=legumi dessert=dolci Delicious!=Delizioso!

Portugal is fun and for the most part quite reasonable. Sea food is plentiful here and well priced. Try the vinho verde (literally green wine). For the sweet tooth, try the pastel de Nata in the north, pasteis de nata in the south; they're a small cream filled tart. For some music, find a fado bar; it puts the blues to shame for sad heart wrenching songs.

You may find in a bistro while waiting for your order to arrive, (especially if they have you pegged for a tourist) some smiling someone will bring a tempting tray of appetizers to your table, and mumble something that sounds like "serveece" and walk away. My, what friendly people! You nibble on one, you have bought the whole tray, and they are not cheap. Just another way for the struggling restaurateur to put his children through college.

Soup is the essential first course of any Portuguese meal. The most popular is likely the caldo verde, made from cabbage, potatoes and spiced sausage. A big bowl can make a nice lunch by itself. another Portuguese staple bacalhau (dried codfish) is everywhere. Locals will tell you that there are as many ways to cook this as there are days in the year. Street stands will offer grilled fresh caught sardines that bear no relation to the tinned varieties.

Here are a few key phrases to help you eat well in Portuguese: Food=alimento breakfast=pequeno almoço lunch=lunch dinner=jantar bread=pão cheese=queijo soup=sopa salad=salad meat=carne chicken=galinha fish=peixes fruit=fruta vegetables=vegetais dessert=dessert Delicious!=Delicioso!

In Spain you have to try the paella. A list of ingredients would be misleading because it varies a slight depending on the location; everybody swears theirs is the best in "el mundo" but only if they are being modest. usually it's rice flavored with saffron, chicken, seafood and/or sausage; it's filling and it's delicious, usually well priced and goes well with beer or wine. For a picnic try some of the Spanish ham, Jamón Serrano, it's indeed on a par with the Italian Parma ham. Tortilla de patatas (potato tortillas), Gazpacho Andaluz (cold vegetable soup), Mariscos (shellfish, some of the best in the world) are found in nearly every bistro and usually not too pricey, particularly if you are not in the top tourist destinations such as Costa Brava and Costa del Sol.

Spanish bars have what they call tapas which are basically "starters" or "appetizers". In San Sebastian there was a bar that boasted of having one hundred varieties. A few good nights have been spent following the Spanish institution of sampling the tapas (one or two at each) and wine in as many bars as was your personal limit. Tourists are indeed spotted when they load their plates full of tapas.

Here are a few key phrases to help you eat well in Spanish: Food=alimento breakfast=desayuno lunch=almuerzo dinner=cena bread=pan cheese=queso soup=sopa salad=ensalada meat=carne chicken=pollo fish=pescados fruit=fruta vegetables=verduras dessert=postre Delicious!= ¡Delicioso!

Best guidance for eating in Europe - like most other activities, is ask the locals. If you are indeed implicated about what you are eating, and how to translate a multi-page menu, Amazon has a series of books (ten dollars each) called the Marling Menu Masters for French, Italian, Spanish and German restaurants. all you ever wanted to know about the menu but were afraid to ask. And may have been good off not knowing!

Are You Eating a Healthy Breakfast Yet?

Let's focus on your health and how you can improve it by eating a healthy breakfast. Notice that I said a healthy breakfast? Eating sugary cereals or leftover pizza does not count as eating a healthy breakfast.

You say you have no time to eat breakfast? It only takes getting up 10 minutes earlier so that you can eat something before your day starts.

Breakfast Pizza

Want to lose some weight? Eating a healthy breakfast in the morning will kick start your metabolism. During the night your body is busy conserving calories. Eating something in the morning will "break" the "fast" that your body is on and will start to end the conservation time to return your energy levels back to normal. Waiting to eat later in the morning, after being up for hours is counter-productive. Skipping breakfast does not result in losing weight, it frequently results in the total opposite. You gain weight when you skip breakfast as you tend to eat even more calories throughout the day.

You want to eat breakfast to start your metabolism running so that you have energy. A car doesn't run on empty and neither does your body. Fill a car with premium gasoline and watch it go. It's the same with your body by fueling it with a healthy breakfast.

Eating a healthy breakfast will stop the mid-morning high-calorie cravings for food at work and the trip to the vending machine or the donut shop for a muffin or sugary donut. Your wallet will also thank you for eating breakfast at home.

You can treat breakfast as quality time with your family. There's nothing like sitting down and enjoying a healthy breakfast with the rest of the family. Start the day off right by eating healthy and enjoying your family. Don't be surprised if your children do better in school, as well. Eating a healthy breakfast in the morning helps them concentrate better as they are not concerned with the rumblings in their stomachs, plus they are more likely to be physically active throughout the day.

You will be setting a good example for your children for their later years. They'll remember sitting down with the family and enjoying their breakfast which will translate to better health in their future. Start the habit early in their lives and they will thank you for it.

You may notice that you're more productive and alert at work, as well. Your boss will appreciate you working, rather than going out for the 10:00 am coffee/donut run. It's called the Most Important Meal of the Day for a reason.

What to eat for breakfast? Ideally, you should have a good combination of protein (such as eggs, dairy, meat and beans) and fibre (found in whole grains, vegetables and fruits). Have an egg, a glass of milk and a banana or have yoghurt with whole grain cereal with blueberries. There are endless combinations that you can enjoy in the morning. You can even split your breakfast if you're rushed for time by eating a hard boiled egg at home and bringing a piece of fruit with some walnuts or almonds to snack on when you get to work. You don't have to eat breakfast food, either. You don't have to eat oatmeal if you don't want to. Instead, you can eat a peanut butter and jam sandwich on whole wheat bread, if you want. In a pinch, you can even eat some of your leftovers from last night (as long as they are healthy).

Remember to enjoy your food and start off your day the right way by eating a healthy breakfast.
